Your Non-Lethal Defense Questions Answered
We take the guesswork out of defending yourself—here’s what you need to know.
Legal & Regulatory
Is the Byrna Launcher legal to own?
Byrna launchers are legal in all 50 states, but some states and cities may regulate CO₂-powered launchers or chemical irritant projectiles. Always check local laws before carrying or transporting your device.
Is a Byrna considered a firearm?
No. Byrna products are powered by CO₂ cartridges and are not classified as firearms by the ATF.
Do I need a permit or background check to buy one?
No permits or background checks are required in most jurisdictions. Byrnas are available to adults 18 and older.
Can I travel with my Byrna Launcher?
Yes, unloaded Byrna launchers can typically be transported in checked luggage. However, most airlines prohibit CO₂ cartridges and chemical projectiles in baggage. Ship those separately or order them to your destination. Always confirm with TSA and your airline before traveling.
Can I carry or draw a Byrna around police officers?
No. Never draw or display a Byrna in the presence of law enforcement. Although it is not a firearm, it resembles one and may be misinterpreted—potentially with fatal consequences.
Who is responsible for knowing the law?
The customer is responsible for complying with all local laws. Always review local statutes before using or carrying a Byrna product.
Product & Operation
What is the Byrna SD?
The Byrna SD (Self-Defense) is a compact, non-lethal CO₂-powered launcher that fires chemical irritants, kinetic rounds, or training rounds. It's constructed from high-strength polymer and aircraft-grade aluminum and requires no permit or background check.
How does the Byrna Launcher work?
The launcher uses an 8g CO₂ cartridge to propel .68 caliber projectiles. Byrna’s patented first-shot pull-pierce system keeps the CO₂ sealed until the trigger is pulled—ensuring instant readiness.
What types of ammo can the Byrna shoot?
Byrna launchers fire kinetic impact rounds, chemical irritant projectiles (pepper/tear gas), and inert training rounds. Choose based on the situation: practice, deterrence, or personal protection.
What is the range of the Byrna Launcher?
Byrna launchers have an effective range of up to 60 feet (18 meters).
How many shots before reloading?
Most Byrna launchers come with a 5-round magazine. Additional magazines are available for quick reloads.
Can I use the Byrna indoors?
Technically yes—but use extreme caution. Chemical irritants can linger in confined spaces and affect bystanders. Ventilate the area and evaluate risk before discharging indoors.
CO₂ & Maintenance
What kind of CO₂ does Byrna use?
Byrna launchers use proprietary 8g CO₂ cartridges. Always use official Byrna-branded cartridges to ensure performance and protect your warranty.
How many shots can I get per CO₂ cartridge?
8g cartridges fire 15–20 shots; 12g cartridges (on select models) fire 25–30. Replace after two full magazines or if unused for extended periods.
How long do CO₂ cartridges last?
Unpierced CO₂ cartridges have an indefinite shelf life. Once pierced, they will leak slowly over 24 hours and should be replaced.
Does the Byrna require maintenance?
Yes. Regularly clean the barrel, check the seals, and lightly oil the internals using Byrna’s maintenance kit. Refer to your manual or this pro tip video for instructions.
How should I store my Byrna?
Store unloaded, with the CO₂ cartridge removed if not used frequently. Keep out of reach of children, and store in a secure, dry place.
Projectiles & Effectiveness
Will projectiles break through thick clothing?
Chemical projectiles may be less effective on thick jackets. Aim for nearby surfaces like walls or ceilings to burst the round and create a cloud around the subject.
How effective is the Byrna for self-defense?
Byrna launchers are designed to incapacitate threats with pain compliance and chemical irritation, giving you time to escape or call for help—without causing permanent harm.
Safety & Responsibility
Is the Byrna safe for home storage?
Yes—when stored properly. Keep it unloaded and out of reach of children. Treat it like any serious defensive tool.
Can a child or teen buy a Byrna?
No. Byrna products are only sold to individuals 18 or older.
What if someone mistakes my Byrna for a firearm?
Byrna launchers do not have an orange tip and closely resemble real firearms. To reduce risk, never brandish it unless necessary. Consider purchasing models in bright colors like Safety Orange for visibility.
